Local Kart Racer Gets Big Break
- January 29, 2010

The road to professional racing usually goes through karting, and it helps to be in a very competitive karting series. Miller Motorsports Park has just such a series and it has paid off in a big way for Amanda Douglas.
Eighteen-year-old Douglas of Springville, Utah, is getting ready to take advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime. She is headed to Las Vegas in February to take part in the SCCA Pro Racing Volkswagen Jetta TDI Driver Selection tryout, thanks to the experience she has gained racing karts at Miller Motorsports Park.
Douglas has been racing karts since she was nine years old, the last three years at Miller Motorsports Park. She won the Senior 4-Cycle Championship in 2008 and placed third in the ultra-competitive Super Sportsman class (in which she was the youngest driver and the only female) in 2009.
Last November, she attended the Lyn St. James Women in the Winners’ Circle Driver Development Academy in Phoenix which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding and developing future racing champions among young women. As a result of her performance in Phoenix, Douglas is one of five young women invited to attend the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Driver Selection tryout. She will be one of approximately 50 drivers competing for one of 25 opportunities to race in the 2010 championship which will visit Miller Motorsports Park over the weekend of June 5-6.
“I am so excited!” Douglas said. “I love racing, and every year that I’ve raced karts I have been thinking about what it would take to become a professional racing driver. The competition I’ve faced at Miller Motorsports Park helped me hone my skills, and attending the Lyn St. James Women in the Winners Circle Driver Development Academy was incredibly educational. Now, to be able to compete in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Driver Selection program is almost unbelievable”
